OPERATION THEATRE TECHNICIAN
Operation Theatre Technician: After passing the examination of Diploma or Degree in Operation Theatre Technician/Technology he or she works in the operation theatre in operating room, Uses his/her technical knowledge & skill to perform the duties assigned to him/her. O.T. Technician is a qualified person, is the member of the surgical team. The team consists of Anesthetist, Anaesthesia assistant / technician, Surgeons, Assistant to the Surgeon, SR’s, JR’s, First assistant, Circulator, Nursing staff. etc.
Duties and Responsibilities: Depends up on the type of duty given to him or her such as;
As an anaesthesia assistant/technician.
As a circulator,
As an Instrument trolley technician/asst,
As a scrub technician/assistant
As a first assistant etc.
Operation Theatre Technician has to carry out the routine work pre-opreratively such as:
Ultra Violet (UV) lighting etc..
So that the environment is free from the diseases causing microrganisms & the required instruments, linen, dressing materials etc are free from the pathogenic microorganisms & ready for the use in operation.
Operation Theatre Technician can be detailled to work at various important places depending upon his caliber, capacity & capability such as Pre-Operative Room "Where The Patient's are kept before the operation" & Post Operatve Room "where the patient's are kept after the operation" where he/she checks the vital signs of the patient before & after the anaesthesia/operation.
Post operative/anaesthesia care may be taken by the nursing staff if the required number of O.T. Technician's are not available.
The preparation of Operation Theatre:
Anesthesia drugs trolley:
Instruments trolley for the operation:
Special instrument trolley
Special equipments or the day's surgery
Preparation of mayo trolley
Equipments: Equipment used are:
Cardiac Monitor Boyle’s machine
C-arm image intencifier unit
Infusion Pump Bipolar
Laparoscopy equipment with Camera etc.
It is not necessary that all the above equipments/instruments will be present in all the OT’s in the hospitals & nursing homes where he/she is employed.
An Operation Theatre Technician is the back bone of the Operation Theatre and an Operation Theatre is the back bone of the hospital. Therefore the requirement of a Qualified & an experienced O.T. Technician always exists in all the good & big hospitals & nursing homes. The O.T. can not run in a proper manner without the qualified O.T. Technician. They perform many things behind the doors of the operation theatre & the success of the operative procedure / surgery / operation / anaesthesia greatly depends upon them. Many things are done,
a) Prior to the operation (Preoperatively)
b) During the operation: (Intraoperatiively) &
c) After the operation: (Post operatively) “which can not be discussed in these few lies”.
Future of O.T. Technician: In my view it's very bright, certainly by the virtue of skill, ability & technical knowledge, he/she fetches the post’s like, in the Department of surgery in operation theatre as;
Managers: There should be a time bound promotion
Superintendent Operation Theatre “Above Twenty Years experience”.
Deputy Superintendent O.T. “Above fifteen years experience”.
Supervisor O.T. “Above twelve years experience.
Senior OT Technician “Above eight years experience”.
Junior OT Technician “Below eight years experience”.
In the department of CSSD;
Sr. CSSD Technician.
Jr. CSSD Technician.
Sr. Anesthesia Technician
Jr. Anesthesia Technician
So appointment can be made for a diploma holder according to his qualification & experience gained after the diploma.
The promotion & pay scale entirely depends upon the employer & the hospital rules & policy or contract between the employer & the employee.
Operation Theatre Technician can also be placed in the ICU’s (Intensive Care Unit’s) in special circumstances. Their skill knowledge will certainly bring them laurels.
